The International Living Annual Global Retirement Index listed Malta among the top 15 countries in the world to retire to for 2014.
This index was given prominence by popular American business magazines, including Forbes, which reported it in its Personal Finance section. Malta was also ranked as the second safest country in the 2013 edition of the World Risk Report.
Amongst the factors which the editors considered, when giving the retirement index rankings, were: real estate, special benefits for retired people, cost of living, and ease of integration.
The survey also looked into entertainment & amenities, health, retail infrastructure, and climate.
It is interesting to note that Malta came eighth, behind Spain but ahead of Ireland, Italy and Portugal, the other European countries on top.
Factors that would have also contributed to such a positive ranking include the fact that Malta is an English speaking country, endowed with over 300 days of sunshine every year.
Furthermore, special benefits programmes introduced by the Maltese Government for foreigners wishing to move to Malta, including the Global Residence Programme and the Malta retirement programme, helped the island to be ranked in the top 15 of this index.
