The Maltese Government recently upgraded the cash rebates for filmmakers by introducing new financial incentives that make Malta more attractive for the film industry.
Productions which satisfy certain cultural requirements can benefit from a rebate up to 40% of eligible expenditure.
Qualifying productions are required to present a provisional application to the Malta Film Commission, including a detailed projection of the Malta budget for the production. The rebate is only given once the filming is complete and on receipt of the audit report.
In order to be eligible, the qualifying company must be either of the following:
- Foreign Qualifying Company, the qualifying company must be either a special purpose corporate vehicle or a company which carries on, or intends to carry on in Malta, a trade or business which is considered as a qualifying production.
- Local Qualifying Company, the company which must have an audio-visual production as its main purpose and activity and that is duly registered as an audio-visual production company in Malta, having at least one director or a major shareholder of the company who is a Maltese/European citizen.
- An audio-visual studio/facility whose main purpose and activity is animation and/or VFX and is a company that is duly registered as an audio-visual studio/facility in Malta, having at least one director or a major shareholder of the company who is a Maltese/European citizen
The Production involved can take several forms, including

- Game shows
The Productions must be all or partially produced in Malta.
